Will (standing in solid mud from a day long rain) rings the bell at #acrosstheyears after setting a new personal record of 37 miles. After 12 hours on course he’s now sleeping soundly. Meanwhile, Melissa has just passed 100 km.
Will completed a marathon in 7h20m and kept right on going with his new friend Danica. He is currently at 29.4 miles and very eager to get to 37 so he can ring the bell they have for anyone who sets a new personal record.
Will has already covered 19 miles, more than half the distance he did last year, and he’s motivated to keep going despite the miserable weather at #acrosstheyears
4 hours into #acrosstheyears and the runners are switching directions. Melissa is at 22 miles, while Will has covered 17 miles. It’s cold, rainy, windy in Phoenix.

An un-decorating mishap yesterday led to half a Christmas tree in my vacuum.

I’d really like to know what the deal is with the aspect ratio of A Christmas Story. The 16:9 widescreen edition on the Blu-Ray and the iTunes HD download are a cropped (top and bottom) version of the 4:3 edition that was released on DVD (though at higher resolution). Presumably the 4:3 edition was itself a cropped version (left and right) of the original theatrical edition, though I suppose it’s possible (but not likely) the film was shot in 4:3. I’d really like to see the original version…
My son wrote a song about bagels. I made a video.
Chubby Cheeks fun run yesterday. I took a hard fall on a gnarly section of trail and my Watch helpfully offered to call emergency services for me. Achievement unlocked ☹️.

‘Tis the season
I had the good fortune of being selected in the Western States Endurance Run lottery on Saturday, with just a 1% 3% chance. Looks like I’ll be heading to Squaw Valley next June 🏃♂️.
Today’s run wasn’t remotely impressive, but it’s the best I’ve felt in the month since JJ100. I’ll take the minor victory.
The Boy training for Across The Years at dusk
I’ve challenged myself to run 20,000 vertical feet during Thanksgiving week the past few years. This year I’m recovering from a foot injury and finished the week a few feet shy of that goal.
- 2015: 20,440 ft.
- 2016: 20,384 ft.
- 2017: 20,279 ft.
- 2018: 3,026 ft.
I’m up to a 1% chance for the 2019 Western States lottery!
I may not have the iPad Smart Keyboard Folio yet, but with the help of a couple of dongles I’m getting by.
11″ iPad Pro arrived (but no keyboard yet). Initial observations:
- Very nice. The thinness feels incredible. Flat edges superior to rounded edges.
- I can’t touch-type on the on-screen landscape keyboard the way I can on the 12″.
- Camera bump surprisingly doesn’t cause a wobble.
